Different Kinds of Fear

Nov 29, 2014

Hi everyone! Happy Fear Monster.... Saturday? Doesn't have the same ring to it, but better late than never! I got sucked into the time vortex that is Bali and lost track of what day it was. (I've also been focused on finishing my book! So close!)

Anyway, this week I've been thinking a lot about the two major different kinds of fear: the fear that keeps you alive, and the fear that keeps you from truly living. We're pretty lucky. For the most part, we can live our lives without being in danger of dying most of the time. But that lovely little evolutionary trait called "fear" gets bored and needs something to freak out about, so it tries to convince us that... say... falling in love is going to kill us.

Or is that just my fear monster? ;-)

But here's how you can tell the difference between the two different kinds of fear. The kind of fear that keeps you alive will spur you into action. If you're truly fighting for your life, you're going to do something -- run, punch, hit, scream, find a translator so that you can talk to the Indonesian police. (Oddly specific, I know. It's all in the book.)

The fear that keeps you from truly living, on the other hand, is paralyzing. It will convince you NOT to take action.

This is a simple little trick, but effective -- hope that helps you to be able to tell the difference!

And sorry again that the comic is so late. Bali time -- things happen when they happen.

Sending you lots of love!!

Jillian
