The Biggest Lie Ever Told

Dec 27, 2014

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a great Christmas!

This week, I was thinking about next year, and what I want to do to better help other people, and George chimed in, "Why? What difference does it make? You could just watch Orange is the New Black on Netflix, and no one would ever notice the difference."

Maybe... but then again, maybe not.

I've noticed that the most convincing argument most people have against helping make the world a better place is, "I can't make that big of a difference, so why bother?" (Myself included, sometimes.) But that's the kind of thinking that keeps the status quo in place. If everyone is convinced they can't make a difference, nothing will change. But on the other hand, if everyone were to do one small thing to make the world a better place, it would have a huge impact.

I know, our fear monsters all want us to be the next Gandhi, but that isn't really necessary or practical. Gandhi became such a big force in the world because he simply did what was in front of him to do. He did what he could to improve the lives of others. And he had some of the smartest advice ever: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." What if it was really just that simple?

So often we get hung up on what other people are doing wrong that we forget to change ourselves. And REALLY, that's the only control you have over changing the world, is changing yourself. As nice as it would be to have a magic wand to make other people behave, it doesn't exist. All you can really do is "be the change," and do the best you can to help others.

And I really believe that if you do just those two things, it really can have a huge impact. (At least, I sure hope so!)

I hope you all have a wonderful and safe new year! See you in 2015!
